Press and peel
Fifteen seconds at 315°F, then peel the film off while it's hot. A five second second press sets it into the fabric.

These are the settings we press at in our own shop. Run a test press first on anything you haven't worked with before.

Press at the settings above. This is what they're set for.
Polyester
Drop the temperature a little and press slightly longer. Lower heat keeps the fabric dye where it belongs.
Blends
50/50 and tri-blends take the standard settings without any adjustment.
Nylon and waterproof fabrics
These want a lower temperature and a test press before you commit to a batch.
Caps and curved panels
Use a cap press and keep the pressure firm across the seam.
Second press
Five seconds with parchment over the top after peeling. This sets the print into the fabric and takes the shine off.

A heat press
A flat platen press with its own temperature and timer control.
Parchment or a Teflon sheet
Goes over the top for the five second second press after peeling.
A pressing pillow
Useful for seams, zips and pockets, letting the press meet the fabric evenly.
Somewhere flat to store sheets
Keep them flat, dry and out of direct sunlight and they'll press months later.
Can you use an iron?
A Cricut EasyPress or similar will press a DTF transfer, and plenty of small shops run on one. Set it to the same temperature and press each area for the full fifteen seconds without moving it around.
A household iron is harder to work with, because it can't hold a steady temperature or apply even pressure across the whole design. If it's what you've got, press in overlapping sections and give each one longer.
Six things that make a press better
Pre-press the garment
Three seconds on an empty press flattens the fabric and drives off any moisture sitting in it.
Use a pillow on seams
Pockets, zips and side seams all press evenly once there's a pillow lifting the area flat.
Peel in one motion
Start at a corner and pull steadily across while the film is still hot.
Always do the second press
Five seconds with parchment over the top settles the print into the fibres and takes the shine off it.
Let it cool before folding
Give the shirt a minute flat on the table and the print sets hard.
Wash inside out on cold
Cold water and inside out keeps the colours bright for years of wear.
QUESTIONS ABOUT PRESSING DTF TRANSFERS
The print looks shiny after pressing, what happened?
That's the film's finish and the second press takes it off. Five seconds with parchment over the top and it goes matte.
How soon can I wash the shirt?
Give it 24 hours before the first wash. Inside out on a cold cycle, and skip the tumble dryer if you can.
Can I press over seams, zips and pockets?
Yes, with a pressing pillow underneath to lift the area flat. Cap seams press fine on a cap press.
How long do DTF transfers last on a shirt?
Washed inside out on cold, a properly pressed transfer outlasts the garment it's on. The print stretches with the fabric rather than sitting on top of it, which is what stops it cracking along fold lines.
Can I press DTF transfers onto polyester?
Yes, and it's one of the things DTF handles better than most methods. Drop your temperature slightly and press a little longer, which keeps the fabric's own dye from lifting into the print.
Do I need to weed DTF transfers?
No. The film only carries ink where your design is, so there's nothing to cut out or pick away. Peel and press is the whole job.
What temperature should I press DTF sheets at?
315°F for 15 seconds at medium pressure, then a hot peel. Lower the temperature a little for polyester and anything waterproof.
How should I store transfers I'm not using yet?
Flat, dry and out of direct sunlight. Stored properly they press just as well months later, which is why ordering a full sheet ahead of a busy season works so well.
